Ferrari Detailing in London

  • 12 min read

It does not matter whether it is a 296 GTB fresh from Maranello, a classic 458 Italia in Rosso Corsa, or a Roma in Grigio Silverstone every Ferrari commands immediate your gaze and attention, immediate respect, and an immediate understanding of the responsibility that comes with working on it.

At AP Car Spa we have the privilege of detailing some of London's finest Ferraris. Our clients bring their cars to us from Kensington, Knightsbridge, Mayfair, Fulham, Battersea, Putney, and across West London trusting us with vehicles that represent not just significant financial investment, but a genuine passion for the most extraordinary road cars ever built.

This is the guide we wish every Ferrari owner in London could read before their car is touched by anyone. It covers every stage of our detailing process, the specific challenges of Ferrari paintwork, the products and machines we use, the protection we apply, and why the skill required to do this work properly is not something that can be rushed or approximated.

Why Ferrari Detailing Requires Specialist Knowledge

Not Every Detailer Should Work on a Ferrari

This is something we say directly to clients who ask, and we mean it without any sense of self-promotion. Ferrari paintwork is unlike the paint system on almost any other road car. The lacquer is soft, thin, and calibrated to produce a depth of colour and gloss that is visually extraordinary. It is also, precisely because of those qualities, highly sensitive to incorrect technique, inappropriate products, and inexperienced hands.

A machine polisher in the wrong hands on a Ferrari bonnet will burn through the clear coat in minutes. An acid-based wheel cleaner applied to a set of Ferrari forged Cavallino alloys will begin to pit the surface on contact.

A wash mitt that has collected grit from a previous panel will introduce swirl marks into that deep Rosso Corsa lacquer that can only be removed by further machine polishing. Every mistake on a Ferrari costs more to correct than it would on a standard vehicle, because the finish is more demanding and the margin for error is essentially zero.

Our team has spent years working on Ferrari and other exotic marques. We understand the paint systems, the alloy specifications, the interior materials, and the precise combination of products and techniques that produces a result worthy of the car.

The skill required to detail a Ferrari correctly is built over years of hands-on experience with exotic paintwork. There is no shortcut, and there is no substitute for a team that has done this work many times before.

The Ferrari Paintwork

Soft Italian Lacquer and Why It Demands Care

Ferrari applies its paint in a way that prioritises visual depth and brilliance over hardness. The result is a finish that looks absolutely spectacular in the right light, but which shows every imperfection just as clearly. Swirl marks from improper washing, water spot etching from rain left to dry on the surface, bird dropping acid attacks, and fine scratches from clothing contact near the bodywork are all highly visible on Ferrari lacquer, particularly on darker and solid colours.

The Colours That Show the Most

Rosso Corsa and the various Ferrari reds are among the most demanding colours to maintain in perfect condition. Red pigments fade more noticeably under UV exposure than most other colours, and swirl marks catch the light dramatically on a deep red finish.

Nero Daytona and other black or very dark Ferrari colours are equally unforgiving every micro-scratch is a white or silver mark against a dark background. Giallo Modena and the brighter yellows show less surface swirling but are highly susceptible to staining from road contamination.

Modern Ferrari Models and Specialist Finishes

Contemporary Ferrari models introduce additional complexity for the detailer. Matte and satin finishes, which appear on certain special editions and Tailor Made commissions, cannot be machine polished and require entirely different cleaning products and techniques.

Exposed carbon fibre elements on cars such as the SF90 Stradale, the Pista series, and the 812 Competizione require dedicated carbon-safe products that clean without leaving residue in the weave. Pearl and metallic finishes require careful colour-matching if any touch-up work is needed during the detail process.

Step 1: Pre-Detail Assessment and Paint Depth Analysis

We Read the Car Before We Touch It

Every Ferrari detail at AP Car Spa begins not with a product or a machine, but with a thorough assessment of the vehicle's current condition. This is a non-negotiable first step that takes anywhere from thirty minutes to over an hour on a car that has not been professionally detailed before.

Paint Thickness Gauge Readings

We take paint thickness readings at multiple points across every panel using a digital paint depth gauge. This tells us the exact amount of clear coat remaining on each section of the car and determines precisely how much correction we can safely carry out.

A Ferrari that has had poor bodywork repairs at some point in its history may have areas where the lacquer is dramatically thinner than the surrounding panels and those areas require a completely different approach. On a vehicle this valuable, working blind without depth readings is not an acceptable approach.

LED Inspection Under Raking Light

With paint depth understood, we inspect every panel under both raking LED light and direct overhead lighting. Raking light reveals surface texture and fine scratches that are invisible in normal viewing conditions. Direct light shows deeper marks, oxidation, and areas of paint that have lost their gloss uniformity. We work panel by panel, noting the type and severity of every defect. This documented assessment shapes the entire detail plan that follows.

Identifying Previous Repairs and Paint Anomalies

Paint depth readings also reveal previous repairs and respray work that may not be visible to the eye. An area with significantly higher paint depth than surrounding panels indicates a previous respray, which changes the correction approach for that panel. On a collector or investment Ferrari, this information is of genuine value to the owner, and we share it transparently as part of our assessment.

Step 2: Safe Pre-Wash and Full Decontamination

Preparing the Surface Without Inflicting a Single Mark

The decontamination phase of a Ferrari detail is where the most significant damage occurs on cars that have been improperly cared for in the past. Physical contact with a contaminated surface introduces scratches. This is why we carry out a thorough chemical decontamination before any physical contact is made with the paintwork.

Snow Foam Pre-Wash

The process begins with a generous application of pH-neutral snow foam applied via foam lance at a safe distance, allowed to dwell for five to eight minutes. The foam softens and lifts loose contamination road film, dust, pollen, and light grime and begins to chemically break down the bond between surface dirt and the lacquer. On a Ferrari that has been driven through London traffic, the amount of contamination visible during a proper foam pre-wash is always significant. Products we use at this stage include Koch-Chemie Green Star, Gtechniq W1 Citrus Foam, and CarPro Descale.

Iron Fallout Removal

Following the foam pre-wash and a thorough rinse, we apply a dedicated iron fallout remover to the entire bodywork and wheels. Products such as CarPro Iron X, Koch-Chemie Reactive Nano Lotion, and Gyeon Q2M Iron react chemically with ferrous contamination, turning purple as they dissolve iron deposits embedded in the lacquer surface. On a Ferrari driven regularly in London traffic, this stage removes a level of contamination entirely invisible to the naked eye but actively degrading the surface.

Tar and Traffic Film Removal

Tar deposits from road surfaces, most commonly found on lower bodywork and sills, are removed using a solvent-based tar remover applied by hand with a clean microfibre applicator. These deposits will not be removed by washing alone. On carbon fibre elements, tar remover is applied carefully and wiped with minimal pressure to avoid marking the weave surface.

Clay Bar Decontamination

Even after full chemical decontamination, bonded surface contamination remains that no wash can remove. A professional clay bar or clay pad, used with a generous lubricant, is worked across every painted surface to mechanically lift this final layer. The result is paintwork that feels genuinely glass-smooth to the touch. For Ferrari paintwork, we use a fine-grade clay medium such as Gyeon Q2M Clay or Gtechniq Clay Bar to minimise any risk of marring the soft lacquer during this process.

Step 3: Paint Correction on Ferrari Lacquer

The Most Skilled Stage of the Entire Process

Paint correction is the heart of a full Ferrari detail. It is the stage that transforms a car from one that looks like a road-driven vehicle into one that looks as though it has just left the factory floor in Maranello. It is also the stage that demands the greatest skill, the most experience, and the most continuous care and attention throughout.

Machine Selection: DA Versus Rotary on Ferrari Paintwork

Our primary tool for correcting Ferrari paintwork is the dual-action forced-rotation polisher. The Rupes BigFoot LHR 15 Mark III is the machine our team relies on most heavily for this work. The DA motion reduces heat generation dramatically compared to a rotary machine, and heat management is critical on Ferrari's soft lacquer.

For the most severe correction work, a rotary polisher may be used by our most experienced technicians in short controlled passes with constant surface temperature monitoring, always followed by a DA finishing stage to ensure no machine marks remain.

Compound and Polish Selection by Correction Level

The combination of cutting compound and pad is selected based on the severity of correction required on each specific panel:

  • Heavy correction: Koch-Chemie MPA Micro Polish Allround or Meguiar's M105 used with a medium-cut microfibre or foam cutting pad, reserved for the most significantly defected panels

  • Medium correction: CarPro Reflect or Gtechniq P1 Heavy Cut used with a medium foam pad the most common level required on a well-maintained Ferrari with normal wash swirling

  • Finishing and jewelling: Menzerna Super Finish 3500 or Gyeon Q2M Polish used with a soft finishing pad to maximise gloss depth and eliminate micro-marring after the correction stage

Paint thickness is checked again after every correction stage to ensure safe removal levels are maintained throughout.

Working Panel by Panel

The correction process is carried out panel by panel, with each section inspected under LED lighting after every polishing pass before work on that panel is considered complete. We do not correct the entire car in one pass and then inspect we correct, inspect, correct further if required, and then move on. This is the approach that produces a result where every panel is equally perfect.

A full two-stage paint correction on a Ferrari, done properly, takes between twelve and eighteen hours of active work. There is no version of this process that is significantly faster without something being compromised.

Step 4: Protection with Ceramic Coating or Paint Protection Film

Locking In the Correction and Protecting the Investment

Correcting a Ferrari's paintwork to perfection and leaving it unprotected is an outcome we would never allow. A freshly corrected, unprotected lacquer surface begins to accumulate new contamination the moment it is driven out of the workshop. The protection stage locks in the correction, enhances the gloss further, and creates a durable barrier between the lacquer and everything London throws at it.

Professional Ceramic Coating for Ferrari

Our preferred protection for Ferrari paintwork is a professional-grade ceramic coating applied in our controlled workshop environment. Products we trust include Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra, CarPro Cquartz Finest Reserve, and IGL Coatings Kenzo. A correctly applied professional ceramic coating provides:

  • Hydrophobic repellency: rain and road spray sheet off cleanly, reducing water spot risk and limiting contaminant contact time with the lacquer

  • Chemical resistance: the cured ceramic layer resists bird dropping acid, tree sap, and road salt far more effectively than bare lacquer

  • Enhanced gloss and colour depth: particularly visible on Rosso Corsa and deep solid Ferrari colours, where the refractive quality of the coating adds a remarkable depth of finish

  • UV protection: meaningful for London-stored Ferraris where prolonged UV exposure contributes to colour fade and lacquer oxidation over years

  • Three to five year protection life: with proper maintenance washing and periodic ceramic topper applications

Paint Protection Film for Physical Protection

For Ferrari owners who want the most comprehensive protection available, we combine ceramic coating with Paint Protection Film on the highest-impact areas front bumper, bonnet, front wings, door edges, mirror backs, and sills. PPF self-heals minor surface scratches and provides absolute protection against stone chips, an everyday hazard for a low-riding sports car in London traffic. We work with XPEL Ultimate Plus and Hexis Bodyfence for all our PPF installations.

Step 5: Alloy Wheels, Tyres, and Brake Callipers

The Details That Complete the Picture

A Ferrari with flawlessly corrected paintwork sitting on poorly maintained alloys is a contradiction in terms. The wheel and tyre finishing on a Ferrari detail receives the same standard of attention as the bodywork.

Ferrari Alloy Wheel Cleaning and Care

Ferrari alloys are cleaned using pH-neutral, iron-reactive wheel cleaners that safely dissolve brake dust contamination without attacking the alloy finish. Ferrari's high-performance ceramic braking systems generate substantial iron fallout, and the concentration on inner faces is invariably more severe than the visible outer face. We clean inner and outer faces, barrels, spokes, and tyre sidewall contact areas thoroughly.

Brake callipers typically red, yellow, or silver on Ferrari models are cleaned with a soft brush and dedicated calliper cleaner, then dressed to a factory-fresh appearance. Tyre sidewalls receive a satin-finish dressing that complements the overall presentation without the over-glossed look of consumer products.

Wheel Protection

Following cleaning, Ferrari alloys are treated with a dedicated wheel ceramic coating or sealant. Gtechniq W2 Wheel Armour provides a durable hydrophobic coating that repels brake dust, makes future cleaning significantly easier, and protects against the corrosive effects of road salt particularly important for a car used regularly in London.

Step 6: Ferrari Interior Detailing

A Performance Environment That Deserves Precision Care

A Ferrari interior is a driver-focused environment where materials Alcantara headlining and seat facings, carbon fibre trim elements, fine leather on bolsters and door cards, Prancing Horse embossed headrests are chosen for tactile quality and visual drama. Caring for these materials requires specific knowledge and specific products.

Alcantara Cleaning

Alcantara is used extensively in Ferrari Sport and Assetto Fiorano specification cars and is one of the most easily stained and marked materials in any vehicle interior. It cannot be cleaned with standard leather products. We use dedicated Alcantara cleaners applied with soft brushes and carefully extracted with a low-pressure hot water extraction machine, working with the grain of the material to lift soiling without crushing the pile.

Carbon Fibre Trim

Exposed carbon fibre interior trim standard or optional on most modern Ferrari models is cleaned with a pH-neutral interior detailer and a soft microfibre cloth. Carbon fibre weave traps dust and product residue in the texture, and the protective lacquer on interior carbon is thinner than the exterior paint system. We avoid any abrasive product on interior carbon and apply a thin protective dressing after cleaning to maintain the depth and clarity of the weave.

Leather Seats, Bolsters, and Steering Wheel

Ferrari leather is used in a performance context, meaning seat bolsters and steering wheels see significant wear from entry, exit, and driving use. Leather cleaning is carried out with a pH-neutral cleaner and soft brushes, followed by a quality conditioner to restore moisture and create a protective surface. For heavily worn bolsters or steering wheel leather, we carry out careful colour restoration where needed to address fading and wear marks.

Ferrari Detailing and Its Impact on Investment

Condition Is Everything When a Ferrari Changes Hands

Ferrari ownership in London carries a financial dimension that makes the condition of the vehicle at any given point genuinely consequential. Whether a car is presented to HR Owen, Tom Hartley Jnr, Talacrest, or RM Sotheby's, or sold privately through the Ferrari Owners Club, the condition of the paintwork, the quality of the alloys, and the state of the interior are assessed immediately and priced accordingly.

A Ferrari with corrected, ceramic-coated paintwork that has been professionally maintained presents as a car that has been owned properly. It commands a price premium, sells more quickly, and gives a prospective buyer confidence that the mechanical history is as well managed as the cosmetic presentation. Conversely, a Ferrari with swirled, neglected paintwork and corroded alloys immediately raises questions about the owner's overall standards of care.

We have seen professionally detailed and protected Ferraris achieve measurably better results at specialist sale and auction than equivalent cars in poorer cosmetic condition. For a vehicle worth six figures, the cost of a professional detail is always justified by the return.
