Polishing Supercars and Luxury Saloons: What It Really Takes

Polishing a car sounds straightforward until the car in question is a Ferrari SF90 Stradale, an Aston Martin DB12, or a Bentley Flying Spur. At that point, every decision carries consequence. One wrong product, one under-prepared surface, one pass too many with an incorrectly set machine and you're looking at swirl marks in a £250,000 paint finish, or worse, a cut-through that strips straight to primer.
Polishing at this level is a discipline. It requires technical knowledge, calibrated equipment, premium chemistry, and the kind of patience that simply cannot be rushed. This guide walks you through the full process what happens, why it matters, how long it takes, and what a properly polished supercar does for your enjoyment and your investment.
What Is Car Polishing and Why Does It Matter?
Polishing is the process of refining a vehicle's paintwork by removing or reducing surface imperfections swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, water spot etching, and buffer trails to restore depth, clarity, and gloss. It is distinct from waxing or ceramic coating, both of which sit on top of the paint. Polishing works within the clear coat layer itself, removing a microscopic amount of material to level the surface and eliminate the defects that scatter light and dull the finish.
On a supercar or prestige saloon, the stakes are high for two reasons. First, the paintwork is often thinner than on mainstream vehicles, with some exotic manufacturers applying minimal clear coat to reduce weight. Second, the visual standard expected is absolute these cars are judged at close range, under direct light, by owners and enthusiasts who know exactly what they're looking for.
Done correctly, polishing transforms a car from presentable to exceptional. The difference in person is striking: a machine-polished Ferrari with corrected paint and a glass finish looks fundamentally different from the same car with a service wash and a tin of supermarket wax.

The Full Polishing Process: Stage by Stage
Stage 1: Pre-Polish Decontamination
Before a single polishing pad touches the car, the paint needs to be clean and chemically decontaminated. We begin with a thorough foam pre-soak and pressure rinse, followed by a two-bucket hand wash using a pH-neutral shampoo. Once dry, we clay bar the entire surface a process that physically removes embedded contamination (iron particles, tar, industrial fallout) that cannot be lifted by washing alone.
For vehicles with heavier iron contamination, we apply a dedicated iron decontaminator first. The solution reacts visibly with ferrous particles, turning purple as it breaks them down. This step is particularly important for cars that have accumulated motorway miles or spent time near construction sites.
The car is then dried fully and inspected under high-intensity raking lights. This is where we map the defects noting areas of heavy marring, isolated deeper scratches, water spot etching, and any sections of paint that are thinner and require a more conservative approach.
Stage 2: Paint Thickness Measurement
We use a digital paint depth gauge on every panel before polishing begins. This is non-negotiable. Paint thickness readings tell us exactly how much clear coat we have to work with, and where we need to be cautious. Supercars in particular especially those with OEM single-stage paint or heavily lacquered Italian finishes can have surprisingly thin clear coats. Knowing the readings allows us to select the right cut level and set the machine accordingly.
Stage 3: Machine Polishing
This is the core of the process. We use a combination of dual-action (DA) polishers and rotary machines depending on the task. DA polishers are safer on delicate paint and ideal for one-step refinement and finishing. Rotary machines offer more cutting power for heavy defect correction but require greater skill and experience to use without causing heat damage or holograms.
Polishing is carried out in stages, working from coarser compounds down to finer finishing polishes. A typical two-stage correction might involve a medium-cut compound on a cutting pad first, followed by a fine polish on a softer finishing pad to refine the surface to a perfect gloss. Three-stage corrections are required for more severe defect profiles.
We work panel by panel, in overlapping passes, maintaining consistent machine speed and pressure. Between panels, pads are cleaned to prevent compound buildup that can cause marring. The vehicle is kept in a temperature-controlled environment throughout.
Stage 4: IPA Wipedown and Final Inspection
Once polishing is complete, every panel is wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to strip all residual polish oils and dust. This gives a clear view of the true paint correction result oils in polishing compounds can temporarily fill and mask remaining micro-scratches, so the IPA wipedown is the honest assessment.
We then inspect every panel under raking LED lights and natural daylight. Any remaining defects are addressed before we proceed to protection.
The Equipment We Use
Professional polishing at this level is built on professional-grade machines. The equipment we work with at AP Car Spa includes:

The machines are only as effective as the technician using them. Setting speed, pressure, and pattern for a Lamborghini Huracán LP is a different task to doing the same on a Rolls-Royce Phantom and that judgement can't be programmed in.
The Chemicals, Compounds, Polishes and Finishing Products
The chemistry used in paint correction is where a lot of studios cut corners. We don't. Our product selection is built around proven professional formulations with consistent particle diminishing, predictable cut levels, and low dusting. Our current core range includes:

A polished car without protection is a job half done. We always recommend sealing corrected paintwork immediately whether with a ceramic coating, a quality wax, or PPF. Polished and properly sealed paint is significantly easier to maintain and far more resistant to new contamination.
How Long Does Polishing Take?
There's no honest short answer to this it depends entirely on the size of the car, the condition of the paint, and the level of correction required. As a guide:
• Single-stage polish (light refinement, minor swirl removal): 4 to 6 hours
• Two-stage paint correction (moderate defect removal, full panel work): 8 to 12 hours
• Three-stage full correction (heavy marring, deeper scratches, oxidation): 14 to 20 hours or more
Larger vehicles Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Range Rover Autobiography take proportionally longer. Vehicles with complex curves, deep shut lines, or recessed panels (Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren) require more precise machine positioning and hand finishing in areas a pad can't reach. We never rush this process. A car that leaves our studio early at the expense of quality is not a car that represents what we do.

The Skill Behind Paint Correction
Machine polishing looks simple from the outside. In practice, it is one of the most skilled tasks in automotive care. Reading paint defects accurately under different light sources. Knowing when to increase cut level and when to step back. Understanding how heat from friction affects thin clear coats. Recognising when a scratch is too deep for correction and needs to be managed rather than chased. Managing pad contamination. Finishing without introducing new swirl marks.
These are judgements that come from years of hands-on experience across hundreds of different vehicles, paint systems, and defect profiles. Polishing and Resale Value
Corrected and protected paintwork has a direct and measurable impact on the value of a prestige or supercar. In the collector and enthusiast market, paint condition is one of the primary criteria applied during private sales, dealer part-exchanges, and auction consignment. A car with documented detailing history, in demonstrably superior paint condition, commands a premium sometimes a significant one.
For limited production vehicles McLaren Special Operations, Ferrari limited series, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur builds the paint is often part of the specification story. Swirl marks, bonnet rash, and oxidised lacquer tell a buyer that the car wasn't cared for. Pristine, corrected paint tells exactly the opposite story. Buyers pay for that confidence.
Beyond private sale, a well-maintained paint finish costs less to maintain over time. A car that's been polished and ceramic coated is dramatically easier to wash, resists contamination more effectively, and requires significantly less corrective work at each service interval. The compounding financial logic of good early care is real.

Signs to Look For That Your Car Need a Polish
Many owners aren't certain whether their car needs polishing or simply a thorough clean. There are clear indicators that point to paint correction being the right next step:
• Swirl marks visible in direct sunlight or under forecourt lighting
• A flat, dull appearance that washing and waxing doesn't resolve
• Water spot etching after outdoor storage or car washes
• Fine scratches from automated car washes, detailing brushes, or poor washing technique
• Oxidation on older lacquer or single-stage paint (common on classics and Italian cars from the 1980s to 2000s)
• Loss of paint depth and 'wetness' in darker colours particularly black, dark navy, deep reds
