Premium Car Detailing: Why It’s Far More Technical Than You Think
At AP Car Spa, we hear it all the time “It’s just cleaning cars, right?” The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.
Premium detailing is not washing. It’s not polishing for shine. It’s a highly technical, method-driven process that requires a deep understanding of materials, chemistry, equipment, and vehicle construction. When you’re working on vehicles worth hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, there is no margin for error. Every decision matters.
We approach detailing as a craft. One that demands precision, discipline, and accountability at every stage.
Understanding Materials & Every Surface Is Different
A modern vehicle is made up of a complex mix of materials and each one behaves differently. Treat them the same, and you will cause damage. It’s that simple.
We deal with:
Soft and coated leather
Alcantara and delicate fabrics
Open-pore and lacquered wood trims
Carbon fibre
High-gloss plastics and piano black finishes
Matte and gloss paint systems
Polished metals and chrome
Each surface requires its own product, its own method, and its own level of care.
For example, the leather in a Rolls-Royce is often open-pore and extremely soft. Over-saturate it, scrub too aggressively, or use the wrong pH balance and you can permanently alter its texture and finish. Compare that to a Range Rover, where the leather is more durable but still requires controlled cleaning and conditioning.
This is where knowledge separates professionals from amateurs.
Knowledge of Detailing and Chemistry of Products Used
We don’t guess. We measure.
Every product we use is selected based on:
Material type
Level of contamination
Environmental conditions
Desired finish
Different surfaces require different chemical compositions. Some require neutral cleaners, others alkaline or acidic solutions. Using the wrong one can strip coatings, stain surfaces, or degrade materials over time.
Equally important is how much product is used, the correct milliliter is essential.
Over-application is one of the most common mistakes in detailing. More product does not mean better results it often leads to:
Residue build-up
Streaking
Premature wear of materials
Chemical damage
At AP Car Spa in Chelsea dilution ratios are controlled, application is intentional, and everything is used with purpose. Precision is not optional it’s fundamental.
How Important is The Methodology?
Our process is not random. It’s structured, repeatable, and refined through experience.
1. Initial Assessment Every vehicle is inspected under proper lighting. We assess paint condition, identify sensitive materials, and determine the correct approach before any work begins.
2. Safe Pre-Wash We remove heavy contamination using snow foam and contactless techniques. This reduces the risk of dragging dirt across the paint.
3. Controlled Contact Wash Using the two-bucket method and premium wash media, we minimise swirl marks and maintain surface integrity.
4. Decontamination Iron fallout removers, tar removers, and clay processes are used where necessary, always carefully, never aggressively done.
5. Paint Correction This is where true skill comes in. Different paints react differently:
Softer paints (like Rolls-Royce) require delicate polishing
Harder paints (common in German vehicles) require more aggressive correction
We adjust machine speed, pad choice, and compound selection accordingly.
6. Protection Application Whether it’s wax, sealant, or ceramic coating, application must be even, controlled, and timed correctly. Too much product can cause high spots and curing issues.
7. Interior Detailing Every material is treated individually. Steam, extraction, and specialised brushes are used depending on the surface.
8. Final Inspection Under high-intensity lighting, we check everything. No shortcuts, no missed details.

Different Vehicles Require Different Expertise
Not all cars demand the same level of skill. The variation is significant.
Ultra-Luxury Vehicles (Rolls-Royce, Bentley):
Extremely soft paint systems
Hand-finished interiors
Delicate veneers and trims
Require the highest level of restraint and precision
Luxury SUVs (Range Rover):
Combination of rugged exterior and premium interior
Larger surface areas increase risk during washing and drying
Complex trims and finishes require varied techniques
Performance & Supercars:
Ferrari 488 GTB - thin, sensitive paint and aggressive body lines
Aston Martin DB11 - intricate curves and delicate finishes
Lamborghini Huracán - sharp angles, matte and gloss combinations
McLaren 720S - extensive carbon fibre components
These vehicles demand:
Advanced machine control
Precise product selection
Experience with high-value materials
You cannot treat a Ferrari like a Range Rover. The approach must change completely.
Equipment: Tools Don’t Replace Manual Skill
We use industry-leading equipment:
Dual-action and rotary polishers
Steam cleaners
Hot water extraction machines
Air drying systems
Precision lighting setups
But tools alone don’t deliver results. It’s the operator behind them that matters.
A polishing machine in the wrong hands can burn paint in seconds. Steam used incorrectly can damage interiors. Even a pressure washer can cause harm if used without control.
Technique is everything.
The Skill Involved in Car Detailing
When you’re working on vehicles of this calibre, the responsibility is immense.
A Rolls-Royce, a Bentley, a Ferrari, these are not just cars. They are investments, statements of engineering, and in many cases, bespoke creations. Damage is not easily fixed, and mistakes are costly.
That’s why everything we do is calculated.
We don’t rush. We don’t guess. We don’t cut corners.
Vintage Vehicle Detailing
Vintage vehicles introduce an entirely different level of complexity to detailing, we have to be aware we are preserving history with what we are doing. Vintage cars demand a far more cautious, preservation-focused approach. Unlike modern cars, vintage cars often feature original, unprotected materials single-stage paint, untreated leather, delicate chrome, and aged fabrics that have naturally weakened over time or may have rushed.
You’re not just cleaning these vehicles for example, older paint systems can be extremely thin and sensitive so aggressive polishing is completely off the table. Leather may be dry and fragile, requiring careful rehydration rather than standard cleaning. Even simple actions, like using too much water or the wrong chemical, can cause irreversible damage. At AP Car Spa, we adapt our entire methodology when working on vintage vehicles, prioritising minimal intervention but impactful, gentler products, and controlled techniques to maintain originality while enhancing condition.
It’s less about correction and more about conservation, and it requires a level of patience and understanding that goes beyond modern detailing.

Each Vehicle Gets Bespoke Premium Detailing
Premium detailing is not about making a car look good for a day. It’s about:
Preserving materials
Enhancing vehicle longevity
Maintaining vehicle value
Delivering a finish that stands up to scrutiny and to a keen eye
It’s a balance between science and personal skill.
Every vehicle presents a new challenge. Every surface requires a decision. Every step must be executed correctly.
At AP Car Spa in Chelsea we’re operating at a level most people never see.
This is not basic cleaning. This is technical detailing at the highest level.
